New AKC Title

I heard the announcement today that starting January 13th 2013 that the AKC will be recognizing the CGC as an official title. The only difference between the certificate and the title is price.

I'm not sure how I feel about the CGC being a title. CGC tests seem so unformal and just about any one can qualify to be an evaluator. Still it might just be enough to get new people addicted to earning titles and progressing in the world of dog sports.

Feel free to comment about your feelings on the change. Be it good or bad I am curious to see what others think.

Full Details From the AKC

  1. I saw this also, since we are getting ready to do the CGC test where I train.

I think it means the AKC needs money.

The fact that I can spend 6-7 weeks training a dog and earn a title is sort of sad.

I could see that as a form of encouragement though and since I found out, I have used it as an additional reason for my students to take the test.

Ehh. I have mixed feeling. I will try to make the best out of it.

  2. I don't think it should be a title. A certificate is good enough to show the accomplishment. What's next, AKC Puppy Star will be a title?

  3. STAR puppy was one of the first things that came to my mind.

I think I would have less of a problem with it if it were more formal and they people giving the tests had to be a little more qualified.

The stay alone kills it for me. They don't even have to stay in the same position. They can sit down, stand up or lay down as long as they do not move forward. Not my idea of a title worthy exercise.
